Is midwifery care covered by insurance?

Many insurance companies do cover midwifery care. Edenway uses a third party insurance billing company that bills exclusively for midwives, birth centers, and parents. Please call us today to talk about your options and for help to determine your coverage for an out of hospital birth.

 

Do you accept people who are on Medicaid?

We can not currently accept medicaid at this time.  We are more than happy to sit down with you and come up with a payment arrangement that best suits your needs.

 

What is included in your fees?

  • All prenatal and postnatal exams and counseling from your staff midwife regarding nutrition, pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Basic OB panel, 1st HIV screen, 3rd trimester HIV screen, GBS screen, hemoglobin finger sticks
  • Services from primary midwife at the birth; including labor support from apprentice midwives
  • If desired, continued labor support at the hospital in the event of the need to transfer care
  • Newborn exam with treatment of the baby’s eyes with Erythromycin as required by Texas law
  • Filing of the birth certificate

The fee does NOT include:

  • Ultrasounds
  • Childbirth classes (Required for all first time parents, VBACs, first out of hospital, and first natural birth parents)
  • Dietitian, Chiropractor, or Physician consult referrals OR transport to the hospital and all doctor/hospital fees
  • Birth kit of supplies (for home birth)
  • $200 charge for home birth if over 20 miles from the birth center
  • Birth Assistant fee of $300 required at the time of birth
  • Any additional lab work or recommended treatments

Do you offer any discounts?

We want midwifery care to be affordable to all our clients. Please talk to us about your specific needs and we will do our best to work out a financial plan that works for you. For those eligible, we do offer an apprentice discount where you will choose an apprentice midwife to provide your primary care under the direct supervision of a licensed midwife. This enables our apprentices to get the hands on clinical experience required for them to become licensed midwives. This opportunity is an incredible blessing to them.

 

Do you have payment plans available?

Yes, we do offer payment plans and would be happy to work with you.

 

What happens if I go past my due date?

It is normal for a pregnancy to continue even two weeks past the due date (http://birthwithoutfearblog.com/2011/08/22/what-acog-has-to-say-about-due-dates/ ). Our goal is to educate you about your options to wait, augment labor, or induce labor and to inform you of the risk/benefits. We then let you make the decision that is right for you.

 

When do you come to me or when do I come to the birth center when I’m in labor?

Each woman is individual in her needs so ultimately it’s about when you feel you need us to be with you. Labor can stall out if the birth team arrives too early so we recommend that you be in well-established labor before summoning your birth team. However if distance or other circumstances make you anxious and you need to come sooner for reassurance, we are happy to support you.

 

What happens if someone else is in labor while I’m in labor?

This does not happen often, but it is our policy that if we have multiple women in labor together that we ask them to come to the birth center. We have several birth suites available. If one does not feel comfortable with this and would like to continue with home birth plans, we will send a back up midwife to her.

 

Who will be at my birth?

Your primary midwife, an assistant midwife, and apprentices will normally be a part of your birth team. Just as the nurses assist a doctor in the hospital, each has a designated role they play during the actual birth (helping with catching the baby if needed, assistant for emergency situations, charting, etc). This does not mean that you will have a large group of people surrounding you during your entire labor, unless that’s what you desire. Until the time of the birth, or unless you need additional support, your primary care will normally come from your midwife and/or primary apprentice midwife and your spouse or chosen labor coach.

 

Who all can I invite to my birth?

We do not have a limit to the number of people you can ask to be at your birth. This is your experience. We do, however, highly recommend that you only invite those into your birthing space that will be 100% supportive of your choices. Your labor will be greatly impacted by the presence of those whom you choose to surround yourself. Negative support may increase your chance of transfer in labor.

 

What do you think about my other children being at the birth?

You are welcome to have your children attend your birth. If you choose to do this, we recommend that you adequately prepare them before the event. If your children are young, we require that you have an adult present who is specifically responsible to attend them during your labor.

 

Can I eat and drink and move around during labor?

We absolutely encourage you to eat, drink, and move in labor! We want you to listen to your body and respond accordingly.

 

How do you monitor me and my baby during labor?

We provide intermittent fetal monitoring with a doppler and also monitor your vitals regularly.

 

How long do I stay at the birth center after I deliver?

By law you must stay a minimum of two hours after birthing the placenta. We require that you and the baby eat. You must void and all vitals have to be stable before you are able to return home. During this time we will normally do the newborn exam and you and the baby will have the opportunity to take a relaxing herbal bath. As long as you are at the birth center, we have to continue monitoring you both which can interfere with your rest. Because of this, once everyone is stable we recommend that you get to your own bed to get much needed sleep as soon as possible. Often the baby will go into a deep sleep a few hours after the birth. We recommend that you take advantage of this time and get sleep yourself!

 

How do I get a birth certificate and social security card for my baby?

After the birth of your baby we will file your birth certificate electronically. Part of this process also routinely includes applying for a social security number for your child.

 

How do I schedule an appointment?

You are welcome to interview any or all of our midwives to find the right fit for you. Feel free to call any one of them directly or call the main office at 817-558-2229 to schedule a free consultation and tour or to set up your appointment.

 

How do I get started with your care? I’m seeing another doctor, how do I transfer into your care?

We recommend that you talk to our midwives and apprentice midwives and find the right fit for you. Please call us to schedule a time to come in for a free consult. If you are already seeing another care provider and wish to switch to our care, we will have you sign a medical release to have your records transferred to us.

 

How early in my pregnancy do you want to see me?

We are happy to interview with you even before you conceive. If desired we can discuss options of preparing your body for pregnancy. While most of our clients begin their care once we are able to hear the baby’s heartbeat (around 10-12 weeks), we are happy to start your care whenever you wish. If you are at risk for miscarriage (have abnormal cycles, history of infertility or miscarriage, just got off hormonal birth control, etc), we like to see you right away to work with you preventatively if desired.
